Geocaching
Geocaching is an increasingly popular, inclusive, fun and healthy pastime for individuals of all ages. It is also great for groups like families, friends, classes and youth groups working as teams. The sport combines technology with adventure. Egyptian Hills Resort has hidden several containers or “caches” in some of the most beautiful parts of the Shawnee National Forest. This family activity consists of using a hand held GPS receiver unit (only available at Egyptian Hills Resort) to guide your family to a destination where we have hidden a container or "cache". Once found, you log your visit in an included logbook, take a family photo that will be placed on the “Geocaching Wall” of our marina, and optionally trade one of the many contained "goodies" for one of your own.
When geocaching is explained for the first time the inevitable question is, "Well if the GPS gadget takes you right where it is, what's the game?" First, the gadget only gets you close -- typically about 10-15 feet away. And, the cache is hidden -- either from geocachers to increase the challenge/fun, or to conceal it from muggles. Muggles are the uninitiated -- people who don't know about geocaching, and may stumble on the cache and take it, ruin it, or throw it away. But, the real fun is spending time with your family while discovering the endless beauty of the Shawnee National Forest.
